2011 Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament

Day Eight Results - Saturday, July 30, 2011

Thirty 20-pound-plus chinooks were brought to scales Saturday, bringing the count to more than 100 in a three-day span that began Thursday. The numbers might have been even
higher Saturday had a late-day storm not chased many anglers back to port.

Jeff Bobula of Poplar brought in a new leader, 32.02 pounds caught late Friday night and weighed Saturday morning. It hit a home-tied fly behind a Dipsy Diver and flasher
combo. Also weighed was a 28.61-pounder caught by Michael Johnson off Rock Island on a green Big Weenie Fly. Other port prize winners included a 24.26 at Sturgeon Bay (Jack
Richard), a 23.77 at Algoma (Tony Castle) and a 20.39 at Kewaunee (Daniel Duaime). A number of 25- to 28-pound salmon were weighed from Sturgeon Bay to Kewaunee by anglers who
did not have entry tickets.

• The tournament ends today at 5 p.m.

• The K/D Committee will meet Monday night to go through the weigh-in slips and finalize a payout based on participation.

• Next year’s 30th anniversary tournament has been set for July 21-29.

Day Seven Results - Friday, July 29, 2011

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better than the 31 20-plus fish weighed Thursday, K/D contestants racked up 41 20-pounders Friday — 32 of them in Door County — and 22
of those at Baileys Harbor and Washington Island.

There were only two changes in the top 20: Jim Condra of Sturgeon Bay reeled in a 26.04-pounder fishing with charter captain Jon Sowl to move into the 10th spot and Kelly
Berken's 25.1-pounder at Baileys moved her into 17th place. Other port prize winners were Michael Behlsen at Algoma (23.64), Jason DeGrand at Kewaunee (23.43) and Michelle
Fredrick at Washington Island (22.54).

The biggest story of the day didn't become official until it was officially weighed Saturday morning. A new leader, 32.02 pounds, was hooked late Friday night off Baileys
Harbor by Jeff Bobula of Poplar. More on that fish tomorrow.

The tournament ends Sunday at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $13 for a one-day, last chance. With so many big fish being caught this weekend, ticket sales remained strong Saturday. Ticket
outlets include Algoma BP, 57 Depot in Baileys Harbor, Kewaunee Marina and Lakeshore Lighthouse in Kewaunee, Hol-N-One Mobil and Greystone Castle in Sturgeon Bay and Kap's
Marina on Washington Island.

Day Six Results . Thursday, July 28, 2011

It was an incredible day at three of the five weigh-in sites Thursday: Washington Island, Baileys Harbor and Kewaunee
combined for 31 chinooks larger than 20 pounds, and three of them topped 27 pounds and moved into the fourth, fifth and
sixth spots.

Washington Island had an amazing 14 at 20-plus-pound "kings", the largest at 27.33 and reeled in by Matt Normann of Sturgeon
Bay. Normann said he caught the 38-inch fish at 9 a.m. 70 feet down in 130 feet of water on a silver spoon.

Baileys Harbor had nine over 20, the largest a 25.65-pounder caught by Cameron Isaacson. Brother Andy, a charter captain
there, also weighed a 20-plus-pounder. They had a pair of 19s as well and said the 57 Special Howie was their hottest bait.

Kewaunee had eight 20s, two of them over 27 pounds. Tom Simonar of De Pere beat Steve Seilo of Green Bay by a mere
four-hundredths of a pound for the port prize there. Simonar's fish hit a green spoon 50 feet down in 200 feet of water at
noon and Seilo's took a herring rig about 25 feet down in 130 feet of water an hour before dark.

The tournament runs through Sunday at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $25 for the final days, or $13 for a one-day chance. Everyone on
the boat must have a ticket. Tickets are available at Algoma BP, 57 Depot in Baileys Harbor, Kewaunee Marina and Lakeshore
Lighthouse in Kewaunee, Hol-N-One Mobil and Greystone Castle in Sturgeon Bay and Kap.s Marina on Washington Island.

Day Five Results - Wednesday, July 27, 2011

There is a new "king" in town - at least for now. Some still believe
it will take a 30-pound-plus fish to win this years tournament and the
$10,000 top prize.

Andy Zellmer of Forestville, a first mate on Fox 1 charters at Sturgeon Bay, said
he will get the biggest fish of his life mounted whether he wins or not after
reeling in a 42-inch, 29.79-pound chinook Wednesday morning near the Bank Reef.
He was fishing with boat owner David "Fox" Wilz, Zellmer's dad, Jim, and friend
Al Lambie of Brussels. They saved the date for a "fun run" to fish the tournament
after a group had earlier cancelled a planned charter fishing trip. Zellmer said
the fish took a Howie Fly trolled about 84 feet down in 130 feet of water

Another trophy-size salmon moved into the third spot, a 28.09-pounder caught by
Dave Champeau of Green Bay and weighed at Kaps Marina on Washington Island. The
fish hit a silver Pro King spoon 55 feet down in 100 feet of water shortly after
sunrise.

Baileys Harbor, where the current second place fish was hooked, weighed one just
shy of 25 pounds, while Kewaunee put its fourth 25-pound-plus fish into the top
10. Nearly 100 20-pound-plus chinooks have already been weighed, a tremendous
increase over recent years.

All the big fish excitement has tempered some of the frustration over lack of
numbers at most ports most days. Many anglers are blaming super-abundant alewife
numbers with slowing the action. On the other hand, alewives fuel the sport
fishery and salmon and trout sizes. Trollers are already predicting even bigger
"kings" in 2012 for the tournament's 30th anniversary.

This years K/D runs through Sunday at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $25, or $13 for a
daily chance. Everyone on the boat must have a ticket. Tickets are available at
Algoma BP, 57 Depot in Baileys Harbor, Kewaunee Marina and Lakeshore Lighthouse
in Kewaunee, Hol-N-One Mobil and Greystone Castle in Sturgeon Bay and Kap’s
Marina on Washington Island.

Day Four Results - Tuesday, July 26, 2011

After a fairly slow opening day Baileys Harbor has been on a roll, and through Tuesday night had the top three fish in the
tournament.

A new leader in the dream for the $10,000 cash was hooked Tuesday around 7:30 p.m., a 41-inch, 28.66-pounder that hit a
flasher/fly combination about 60 feet down in 200 feet of water off Baileys. Mark Alberts of Fremont, fishing with his buddy
Paul Fisher of Sherwood, was the lucky angler.

Baileys also had a 24.62-pounder caught by Dave Tillman, and at Kewaunee, former K/D winner Scott Polifka landed a
25.44-pounder out of his home port. More than 70 20-pound-plus fish have already been weighed, and the top 35 fish are all
over 22 pounds.

The K/D runs through Sunday at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $25 for the remainder of the tournament, or $13 for a daily chance.
Everyone on the boat must have a ticket.

First place is $10,000 cash, a free mount of the winning fish by Northland Taxidermy of Algoma and a custom sterling silver
chinook salmon ring with a diamond eye by Paul Spanbauer. Second place is $2,000 cash and a pair of Scotty electric
downriggers valued at $1,500.
