2008 Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament
Rumors of a 29-pounder Thursday and a 31-pounder Friday were just that ?
rumors. Or, perhaps they were weighed with ?eyeball scales? by anglers not in
the tournament. Either way, a 25.86-pound chinook ? the largest in any Lake
Michigan tournament so far this season ? is still atop the leader board heading
into the final weekend of the 26th annual Kewaunee/Door County Salmon
Tournament.
Kim Snelgrove of Fargo, North Dakota is hoping her trophy catch sticks; 2,000 or
so others have dreams of landing one a little bit bigger.
Day Seven was big for Kap's Marina on Washington Island. They weighed six fish
that cracked into the top 50, the largest a 22.15-pounder that moved into the
top 10.
All the other ports had a single fish move into the top 50, all of them
20-plus-pounders. With two days of fishing to go, there are already more
20-pounders registered than there were the entire nine days in 2007.
Jerry MacMillin of Sturgeon Bay, one of the tournament?s organizers, believes a
big fish will be taken Saturday (he didn?t say how big, just ?big?). Will his
premonition come true? Stay tuned!
The 26th annual Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament is supported by ticket
entry fees and these fine sponsors: Luhr Jensen Tackle, Opti Tackle, Big Lake
Tackle, Wild Eagle Lodge, Plano, Bay Lake Bank, Flanigan Distributing and Twin
Rivers Taxidermy.

Correction: July 26 port prize weight at Washington Island for
Lee
Franzen was 20.09 (not 20.29).
There were 10 additions to the top 40 Tuesday, day four
of the
26th
annual Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament. Four of the chinooks were
heavy
enough to crack the top 10, including a new third place fish at 23.66
pounds for
Larry Thompson at Baileys Harbor.
Many anglers have found it a difficult bite this week, with more small
fish
showing up yearling chinooks in the 13- to 15-inch range. Things can
change
quickly, though, and the 2,000 or so contestants are hoping that cooler
water
from an offshore blow today might spark an improved bite.
Kim Snelgrove of Fargo, North Dakota was still atop the leader board
Tuesday
evening with her 25.86-pounder, caught late Sunday and registered Monday
morning
at Algoma. First prize is worth $10,000 cash. The tourney typically pays
down
200 or more places.
Tickets are still available for the event, which ends at 5 p.m. Sunday.
